Brian's response to a letter, “Why Venezuela is a Genocide,” by US Senator Rick Scott, May 22, 2019, in the Tampa Bay Times

US Senator Rick Scott is not wrong in applying the word "genocide" to the Venezuelan situation. What he does have wrong is that the ugly label he uses does not apply to the Venezuelan President's socialist government, but to the United States government (!)

Webster's Dictionary defines "genocide" as "the systematic killing of, or a program of action intended to destroy a whole ethnic or national group." America’s actions over the last 20 years toward Venezuela may not have been intended to wipe out a nation, but its’ end result in Venezuela is the same!

Since 1998 the Clinton, Bush, Obama and Trump Administrations have conducted a systematic and long series of intimidation, verbal and financial threats, economic and military sanctions and covert actions with Venezuelan military personnel.

The CIA and the DEA have had early knowledge of coup attempts and had ties to the actual Venezuelan coup participants. Venezuela has had to expel many US diplomats over their conspiring with anti-government opposition leaders.

The United States imposed sanctions on Venezuela and its leaders from 2011 through 2019, by blocking the country’s bank access to money (causing inflation), the purchase and selling of oil, the purchase of defense equipment, and access to food and medicine.

The party guilty of causing starvation and a humanitarian crisis by conducting “genocide” in Venezuela, rests alone with the United States of America.
