Happy to see that Florida Sheriffs are respecting federal immigration laws and not trying to please President-Elect Donald Trump or Governor Ron DeSantis' aggressive tactics in pushing local and state police and state and local elected officials to take part in Trump's expulsion plans of immigrants.
Such local or state actions would not only violate federal laws, but would also be costly and burdensome to Florida taxpayers. Florida state legislative leaders are also showing leadership by refusing the Governor's call for a special legislative session without legislative preparation and any new federal law changes. Plus, local or state authority involvement will grow government, not reduce it, as Republican officeholders have promised.
Florida sheriffs are also showing backbone in following existing federal laws and not catering to the whims of political leaders. Need we remind local and state authorities that they are required to operate in a non-partisan and lawful manner with regard to federal government actions.
If there is any abuse of laws by police or political leaders, or even the Florida National Guard, we will expect organizations like the ACLU to immediately seek immigrant protections from the courts.
Citizens may have to put their bodies on the line in the form of public protests, or even civil disobedience. This will be necessary if the state's political leaders try to intimidate sheriffs or local officials with illegal laws that include misdemeanor offenses or felony crimes leading to imprisonment if not followed.
