Statement by the National Peace Action Committee of Green Party USA
The Peace Action Committee of the Green Party of the United States (GPAX)
strongly condemns the unprovoked attack by the U.S. and Israel on the Islamic
Republic of Iran. This attack is a gross violation of international law, and the
consequences of continued fighting could include widespread regional devastation
and a possible nuclear war.
The US attack on Iran and the assassination of Khameini occurred in the middle of
diplomatic negotiations and without Congressional approval. President Trump
continues to make a mockery of diplomacy and legal constratints, acting like an
emperor instead of an elected official. Congress must act to curb his excesses
before he does further damage.
Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz has already resulted in disruption of global
energy markets, the world economy and increased oil prices, with more economic
damage to follow with each day this war continues. The reputation of the U.S. as a
negotiating partner is in tatters after Trump has repeatedly used negotiations as
cover for preparation of military attacks.
As political activists and global citizens we call for an immediate end to the US/Israel
war against Iran, followed by high-level international intervention and diplomacy to
end this war and preventing it from becoming a global calamity. It is crucial for
international bodies, as well as our own political leaders, and the US public at large
to speak out forcefully to make diplomacy the highest priority.
The immediate path to peace and security is the US and Israel halting their attacks
on Iran, leading to a de-escalation of military threats by both sides and diplomatic
engagement by their leaders with international and multilateral bodies.
Action is needed now to facilitate a neutral platform for de-escalation and
communication between the parties involved. International organizations also
need to deploy observers and to engage other diplomatic measures to reduce
the tension between Iran and the United States, as well as in the entire Middle
East.
The Green Party strongly supports nuclear disarmament and has long called for
countries like the US and Israel to get rid of their nuclear weapons. However, it is
unreasonable for the US to expect that Iran would end its own nuclear program and
eliminate its long-distance missiles, leaving it defenseless against countries like the
US and Israel which have already militarily attacked it.
GPAX believes in grassroots democracy and the right to self-determination, and
supports the rights of Iranians to peacefully protest for reforms. However, the future
of the Iranian government is something for the Iranian people to determine free from
interference from outside forces.
